With Melbourne Food and Wine Festival coming to a close, we wanted to share with you our top picks from the two-week festival.
From breakfast through to dinner, from late night snacks to midnight feasts the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival had it all!
Snacks, Because Why Not – The Convenient Store
In partnership with 7-Eleven this part Japanese convenience store, part bodega served up a range of fresh and exclusive snacks.
Think MoVida’s smoked tomato tapa turned into a savoury sorbet, or prawn cocktail flavoured Chappy’s chips with Yarra Valley Caviar, or neenish tarts from Falco and let’s not forget pastries from Monforte.
The showstopper for us was rolling in on a sushi train, and not just any sushi train, the onigiri train.
From Friday 25 March to Sunday 3 April, 8am – 7pm daily, The Convenient Store served up the very best Victoria has to offer.
Even Longer Lunch – High Steaks at Chancery Lane
It wouldn’t be Melbourne Food and Wine without a long lunch. Our pick was Chancery Lane, we adore its old-world opulence when you walk through the doors. The dark green marble bar, dramatic arched floor to ceiling windows and cosy leather banquettes are always sure to please anyone.
The luxe menu which MFWF described as “dangerously likable”, featured a martini on arrival, seafood hors d’oeuvres, wagyu tartare and 40-day aged grass-fed Tasmanian Hereford rib-eye, just to name a few.
To finish, Section 28 Mont Priscilla cheese, honeycomb and lavosh.
Dinner – The Big Spaghetti
Think Hawker style market but for spaghetti, an Italian style street fair. Located in the E shed in Queen Victoria Market, there were 20 delicious dishes on offer across ten different stalls.
Featuring the likes of Mister Bianco, That’s Amore, Tipo 00, Al Dente, Marameo, Agostino, Lagotto, Paski and Pastore.
That’s not all, there was an array of Italian cocktails, Pidapipo gelato, prosecco, Pizzini and much more.
Presented by That’s Amore, Melbourne’s favourite cheese makers. We fell in love with the four-cheese-spaghetti formaggi, tossed right in front of your eyes in a 40-kilogram wheel of Grana Padano. And don’t forget the ricotta filled cannoli, quite possibly the best in Melbourne.
Dessert – Snacktown
We always say yes to dessert! We headed over to Snacktown to nibble on some of Melbourne’s most iconic sweet treats. Also located in Queen Victoria Market’s E shed, there was no excuse not to check this town out.
We’re talking Oriental Teahouse white chocolate dumplings with coconut praline and Aviv Cakes & Bagels, Israeli babka. If that doesn’t entice you, the Mabu Mabu home-made damper with whipped golden syrup butter was sure to hit the spot.
Whatever your budget make sure you immerse yourself in the incredible food and drink Melbourne has to offer. You won’t regret it. To see what events are still available to book or visit please visit https://www.melbournefoodandwine.com.au/program
